Congress has finally gotten around to completing their report on the 9/11 tragedy and it makes for interesting reading. The main point of the investigation is that the FBI and CIA missed opportunities and did not act quickly or decisively in dealing with terrorism prior to 9/11. In effect what they are saying is that "somebody missed something".

Hello. When it comes to missed opportunities, procrastination and indecision the US Congress should know. They wrote the manual. After all it took them two years just to figure out that "somebody missed something" while the rest of us had figured that out in the first five minutes . And they did it in under 900 pages.

It appears the 101st got Uday and Qusay Hussein in an ambush in Iraq .

Speculation is that with them out of the way some of the attacks on American troops will cease. That's probably wishful thinking, but even if it doesn't diminish the attacks the world is still a better place without the two of them in it.

Unfortunately, I'm reminded of the old Emerson quote, "When you strike at a King, you must kill him" and until we have Saddam's head on a pike I'm afraid it ain't near begun to be over......... But it helps.

Ever notice when the new "big" company comes to town to 'save the community" amidst parades and fanfare they only stay about ten years and then leave the countryside dotted with empty buildings while they move on to greener pastures. Ever wonder why?

It's tax incentives from state and local government that got them to come. When the incentives run out, so do they leaving the employees, taxpayers and community who thought they were investing in their own future holding the empty bag.

Some call it corporate welfare. Others call it "playing the game by the rules they wrote for themselves". Karl Marx would call it "Compassionate Conservative Corporate Communism for Capitalists".

Jessica Lynch comes home to join the ranks of Sgt. York and Audie Murphy today. Though she appears not to have shot anyone or saved anyone or captured anyone and has become famous by instead being captured herself I would argue that she still deserves her accolades. She volunteeered, put in her time, put up a fight and did her unit and her gender proud, which is more than I can say for the politician that sent her.

Remember that big meeting the Vice President had just after the Presidential Appointment that was supposed to deal with developing a National Energy Policy to decide where our energy of the future will come from. Remember the one that the VP refused to talk about or give us a list of the attendees. You know the one prior to 911 and the war. Well, we still don't have the list, but we do have some of the documents through the "Freedom of Information Act". And they are.....?

Surprise!!!
Maps of Iraq. Will wonders never cease.

In our zeal at the heighth of the UN debate over the Iraq War we dumped French Fries for Freedom Fries, French Toast for Freedom Toast and French's Mustard went so far as to tell all of us they weren't French.

Now that things are going bad in Iraq, our troops are not coming home on time and more are being sent what does the administration say we need?

You got it.............................French troops.

The latest broo-ha-ha from Washington has to do with the President getting something wrong in the State of the Union address and using false information to whip up a reason to go to war with Iraq. Even some of the President's supporters are suddenly being critical.

Personally, I've been less than supportive of the President over the past few years but hold up here. This seems patently unfair and over the top by the President's critics. Walter Reuther used to say, "If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck....it's a duck".

Well for three years this man has been spouting false statements, misconceptions and mis-pronounciations like a veritable canning factory at harvest time. Suddenly he's guilty of being a duck! Sounds more of a case of the willingly blind being un-led by the blind willingly and they've just woke up to find themselves up to their ears in alligators and now they want to eat their guide.

The White House came out with a rosey economic picture this morning. The economy is going to improve, .....sometime after the next presidential election, but we already knew that. It's the present that has us concerned.

Right now the deficit is at a record $455 billion. Estimates for the cost of the war in Iraq have been way off and there is no end in sight. The President's tax giveaway from your grandchildren that was supposed to spur the economy hasn't, and the government is projecting more deficits in the future. Add to that the looming specter of many of the states and local municipalities going under next year with massive layoffs in the public sector and you have a recipe for a financial dilemma of Biblical proportions.

The reason is obvious. The education President who wants every child in America to be able to read, write and do math.....................can't.

I've been reading lately about how Rome fell. Appears their government had something to do with it. Now wasn't that unexpected. I was also struck by the parallels between old Rome and new Washington.

Like us, they did have a Emperor elected by the government whose primary function seems to be expanding the Empire. They also had a Senate too which should pretty much seal the deal. The only difference seems to be that they didn't have a House of Representatives to confuse the issues, they didn't have political parties to sell votes and they didn't have a free press to get the story wrong.

Unnerving to think that the fate of the nation could well rest with a bunch of pre-paid political hacks from East Jesus and West Podunk and the editorial staff at the New York Times but that's what we're all about.

There's an old saying that God looks out for children, drunks and the United States of America. Might just be something to it.

Another US soldier was killed in Iraq today. It's the 81st soldier to die since hostilities ceased May 1st. And, like the others, no name, no rank, no home address. That's in stark contrast to the death notices during the war when the government put names and faces on every one of them and called them heroes and talked about their sacrifices to generate support for the war effort .

Now that the war is losing it's luster, things aren't going according to the plan (assuming we have one) and the liberators are being referred to as "occupiers" by the liberated, they've just become nameless, faceless numbers. Now we don't see grieving families whose child, sibling or parent died for the cause because we might start to question the cause.

Just goes to show that you can generally tell a situation is going bad when you stop being a person and become a statistic.
