Winter's back. Being in the northeast our "Darkside" knows it was bound to happen. It always has. Just that we were not hoping for so much of it. Right now it's 5 below and dropping.

Deep down inside I think every northeasterner wishes for winter to behave according to some sort of schedule. Like start December 1st. End January 15th. And in between stay a balmy 31 degrees so we can get skiing, skating and snowmobiling out of our systems, have a white Christmas, a frosty New Year with appropriate spirits to keep us warm and then go play a round golf in 70 degree weather on January 16th at the local course.

It originally started with the "Indian Summer Myth" which says if the snow melts for one day in November, Spring is just around the corner and so we promptly go out half naked and try to catch pneumonia to prove "we believe".

Sometime between mid and late January the thermometer will peak above 32 degrees for a day. We will promptly lose our minds again with "January Thaw Fever". We'll start cleaning our golf clubs, getting out our summer clothes and maybe even go out in the garage and fire up the lawn mower just "to see". This is all in preparation for "February Cabin Fever" and "March Mud Days" which we really believe won't happen this year. It all ends April First when we regain our senses, declare ourselves to be fools and go out and play in the sleet and rain and vow not to be so easily misled next year.

We can't help it. We were born to it, raised on it and some might say we even relish the misery of it. We believe it builds "character" and shows we are "commited". The unfrozen world believes we are "characters" and need to be "committed". I guess what you see just depends on where you sit.

The first big battle is shaping up in Iowa with the Democratic caucus next week.

Dean appears to be in the lead which generally means you become the lead target for everyone else to shoot at. His issues are the ongoing war in Iraq which he believes would have been more easily won by a conservative position of not going there to begin with, Universal National Health Insurance which would be a boon to small and large businesses in this country and cost less than the non-system we have now, and balancing the budget instead of borrowing from our great grandchildren to pay other countries bills. Will be curious to see how he does running on Republican issues in a Democratic caucus.

If he wins the nomination it will also make for an interesting election in the Fall where the Republican Administration will be defending the traditional Democratic issues of being pro-war, anti-business, high deficit spenders.

Of course the problem with either package is nobody has anything left to do anything with anyway so it probably doesn't much matter but it will make great entertainment while we talk about what we can't do.

Latest flap from the White House is about former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neil's talking about the Bush plan to invade Iraq practically from the day the Bush II Administration took office. Where has he been?

Obviously Mr. O'Neil hasn't been listening to the reasons why we went there which are:

1. He (Saddam) has Weapons of Mass Destruction...... Somewhere. And we are prepared to send astronauts (military again) to the moon and Mars, if need be, to find them.
2. Saddam is a "bad man". Another revelation.
3. He (Saddam) might have had contact with people who have "bad" weapons and would be willing to sell them to " bad people". (Donald Rumsfield and previous administrations are excluded from this list).
4. He (Saddam) might have ties to the 911 terrorists, or he might not since we can't prove it. After all they came here from Canada. There must be some hidden meaning in this ....somewhere. Take it on faith.
5. He (Saddam) wanted to kill the Presidents' father (George I). Valid if it didn't cost 500 (and counting) American lives. This argument might have more credibility if Vietnam war hero George II (saved U.S. from the Vietnamese Invasion of 1968 by manning a bar on the Mexican border as a pilot with the Texas Air National Guard) was over there (Iraq) instead of over here.
6. American occupation of Iraq will bring stability and the blessings of liberty and democracy to that country (for as long as we stay there in force), maybe,....someday.
7. The Iraqi's will be able to elect their own President just like American's do. (Maybe we can save them time by loaning them our Supreme Court to do it for them). We won't need to send the whole court either. Just the one vote that decided the appointment...... Worked for us.
8. A democratic Iraq will have the wherewithal to rebuild their own economy from their own resources. (They better because we are running out of money to do it for them).
9. American aid will assist Iraq (hereafter referred to as the 51st US state of Halliburton) in rebuilding all of the things we broke on their behalf.
10. Iraq has more oil than God......... Minor point.

Question: Does Canada have oil?

Winter's here. Must be the season. Cold, rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain, ice, wind, slush and occasionally new crops of mud, all of which means the snowbirds will start flocking South to Florida while the rest of us will stay "up North" and build our character. Those of us that remain behind do so while silently questioning the motives, endurance, and sheer lack of loyalty of our southerly departed traitors. We do not however, question their sanity. And by February we have lost ours but are to cold too notice.

It seems the "Reality TV" shows are still all the rage. That's where the tv show producer puts you in some God-forsaken place with a bunch of weasels and gives you a million bucks if you survive to the end. If not, at least you get to be on tv and then go home. And you can quit anytime. Unfortunately that's contrived reality.

How about a show that snatches you from your family and sends you to some God-forsaken place with weasels with Rocket Propelled Grenades's who want to put one down your throat. You can't quit and if you do come home it may be in a body bag. For fun we take away your combat pay and if you get wounded we make you pay for your meals while you're in the hospital.... and as a Christmas present we double your tour of duty from six months to a year which means if you do come home you probably won't have a job to return to.

We can run the show every night at 6:30. Dan Rather, Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw have already agreed to host it. Now that's real "Reality TV".

Well the two month vacation is over and it's back to the blog world.

You would think in two months without anyone on his back the President would have straightened out this Iraq thing. Apparently not.

Now we know there are no Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. Must be everyone else has borrowed them. We also have an admission that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Surprise! It must have been someone else. And the elected government Iraq was going to have in six months, isn't. Seems the only people who can put together a bona fide election are busy showing us how it's done in California.

When they get done there they can take that circus to Bagdad to entertain the troops. More fun tomorrow.

All of the speculation is on the governor's race in California today. Ariana Huffington is entering the race. Thinks she has to do something to keep her name in front of the public, otherwise it's hard to figure out who she is, what she does or why we should care. Arnold Schwarzenner is trying to decide if there is the physical room to print his name on the ballot before he tries a remake of the Ronald Reagan series. Jerry Springer made the mistake of not moving his show to California so he's running for Senator from Ohio.

At some point we can hope that a stray voter might want to ask what these people know about delivering services, balancing budgets or solving problems but until then the rest of us will have to try and figure out if we're watching a comedy or a tragedy and whether the entertainment is worth the money we're going to be paying for it.

Having started a recall against Governor Gray Davis the Conservative-Republican Party in California wants to complete the circus by running "Terminator" actor Arnold Schwartzenneger to replace him.

Personally, not being a Californian I haven't a clue as to whether Davis is good, bad or incompetent, but whatever he is or whatever he's done, a quick look around the country will tell you he has lots of company in governors mansions across the nation so I don't believe he got into this mess all by himself.

However if I accept the premise that the recall of an ineffective politician idea does have merit and based upon the logic that incompetence at the top should be recalled, I should be able to logically assume that the Conservative-Republican Party in California will shortly be moving to recall President George W. Bush and replace him with a flying pig................ Yes, they believe in that too.

We have troops in Afghanistan. We have troops in Iraq. We had troops in Liberia. We have troops in Korea. We might send troops to Haiti. Again. Seems like we have a lot more places to fill than we have people to fill them and as soon as we arrive there's always a committee waiting to tell us to go home.

Personally, if we're going to occupy someplace I'd at least like to see us send our troops to some place where the people would be glad to see them, be willing to pay for their presence and ask them to stick around for a while..... How about we send them to the United States for a change?

Congress has finally gotten around to completing their report on the 9/11 tragedy and it makes for interesting reading. The main point of the investigation is that the FBI and CIA missed opportunities and did not act quickly or decisively in dealing with terrorism prior to 9/11. In effect what they are saying is that "somebody missed something".

Hello. When it comes to missed opportunities, procrastination and indecision the US Congress should know. They wrote the manual. After all it took them two years just to figure out that "somebody missed something" while the rest of us had figured that out in the first five minutes . And they did it in under 900 pages.
