We have troops in Afghanistan. We have troops in Iraq. We had troops in Liberia. We may be sending troops to Haiti....again. Seems like we have more places to fill than we have troops to fill them and as soon as we arrive there is always a welcoming committee waiting to invite us to leave.

Personally I think we should think about sending our troops someplace where they are glad to see them, willing to pay for them and don't want to shoot them by the second day.......like maybe the United States for a change.

Snow for sale. We have lots of it. New and antique. Slushy, crusted, powder or compacted. Mostly white, some brown or dingy, some occasional yellow. Willing to let go for any reasonable offer. Closeout sale. This years supply won't last another 30 days so don't wait. Just stop by, pick up all you want and I'll bill you later. If I don't get your name don't worry. I'll catch you next time.

It's a curious fact of American history that most of the things the states now make money on we used to put people in jail for. Gambling, we got the state lotteries. Liquor, we got taxes. Tobacco, we got more taxes.

What do we need all of those tax dollars for?

To run public service commercials to tell you not to smoke, drink or gamble. It salves our conscience, sounds responsible and makes money for the state because we don't follow the advice. That's a Trifecta winner in anyone's book.

Democrats seem to be making quite a broo-ha-ha over the President's not showing up for Air National Guard duty during the Vietnam War.

The President says he did and implies it's not a big deal. I tend to agree with him. Based on the way he's run the country he wouldn't have been any help then either.

My concern, and it should be the Presidents too, is not whether or not he showed up for Guard duty, it's whether or not the present Guardsmen do.

I see by the news in Iraq that police and army recruits were waiting in enlistment lines when suicide bombers blew 97 of them up over the past two days. Begins to explain the unpopularity of government work in Iraq. "Sign-up and Die before the Ink is Dry" will not prove to be a popular recruitment slogan.

Seems our "My way or the Highway" attitude has created another classic Catch-22 for ourselves and we would like to find anyone to blame but ourselves for the delimma we find ourselves in that we can't figure a way to get ourselves out of and can't come up with a convincing reason for why we got into it.

Fortunately we have a classic solution to this classic American problem. We shall blame the French.

Appears the Fall election has already started.

Bush says Kerry is going to raise taxes. Kerry says Bush has already spent the money he is going to have raise the taxes for.

Bush says he cut your Federal taxes. Kerry says George sent the bill to the locals and that is why you're now paying it out in state and local taxes.

Bush says the deficit is only because we need money for the war. Kerry says George told us the war was over almost a year ago.

Bush says the deficit was necessary and temporary. Kerry says he borrowed the money from your grandchildren.

Bush says the economy is improving. Kerry says, "In China, where your job went".

As for the rest of us, we are going to have take a course in Economics just to figure out which one can do Math by next November.

The President has called for an investigation to discover why our intelligence agencies are not giving him timely and up to date information so that he can make critical decisions in a timely manner. The report is due in 14 months and after his next re-election, which means we will have at least 14 more months of guessing about the timely and critical intelligence information for our critical decisions instead of worrying about the decisions themselves. Considering the track record perhaps if he stopped making timely and critical decisions altogether we wouldn't have to worry about how timely and critical the intelligence information happens to be.

When I watch the news anymore I'm reminded of the Elayne Boosler quote, "When women are depressed they either eat or go shopping. When men are depressed they invade another country". Which brings us to the invasions and how they are going and why there is no depression in Washington and everyone at the White House is so happy these days..

Afghanistan looks good. We liberated the country to get Osama ben Laden out, eliminate al Quaeda and give the country back to the Afghans. It worked. Osama ben Laden left. We don't know where. We eliminated al Quaeda to Cuba where we can't figure out what to do with them and the Afghans are in the process of taking their country back, from us.

Iraq looks good. We liberated the country to get Saddam Hussein out, eliminate weapons of mass destruction and give the country back to the Iraqi's. It worked. We got Saddam Hussein out but can't figure out what to do with him, we eliminated the weapons of mass destruction because there weren't any and the Iraqi's are trying to take their country back, from us.

The next invasion plan is Mars. As I speak we are searching the surface of Mars for someone to get rid of, something to eliminate and somebody to give the planet back to so we can have a reason to go there. If we sent Saddam Hussein and al Quaeda to Mars that would give us the first two reasons and as we have seen in Afghanistan and Iraq that's enough to send the troops looking for phantom reason number three. Smile. It just gets better and better.

Winter's back. Being in the northeast our "Darkside" knows it was bound to happen. It always has. Just that we were not hoping for so much of it. Right now it's 5 below and dropping.

Deep down inside I think every northeasterner wishes for winter to behave according to some sort of schedule. Like start December 1st. End January 15th. And in between stay a balmy 31 degrees so we can get skiing, skating and snowmobiling out of our systems, have a white Christmas, a frosty New Year with appropriate spirits to keep us warm and then go play a round golf in 70 degree weather on January 16th at the local course.

It originally started with the "Indian Summer Myth" which says if the snow melts for one day in November, Spring is just around the corner and so we promptly go out half naked and try to catch pneumonia to prove "we believe".

Sometime between mid and late January the thermometer will peak above 32 degrees for a day. We will promptly lose our minds again with "January Thaw Fever". We'll start cleaning our golf clubs, getting out our summer clothes and maybe even go out in the garage and fire up the lawn mower just "to see". This is all in preparation for "February Cabin Fever" and "March Mud Days" which we really believe won't happen this year. It all ends April First when we regain our senses, declare ourselves to be fools and go out and play in the sleet and rain and vow not to be so easily misled next year.

We can't help it. We were born to it, raised on it and some might say we even relish the misery of it. We believe it builds "character" and shows we are "commited". The unfrozen world believes we are "characters" and need to be "committed". I guess what you see just depends on where you sit.

The first big battle is shaping up in Iowa with the Democratic caucus next week.

Dean appears to be in the lead which generally means you become the lead target for everyone else to shoot at. His issues are the ongoing war in Iraq which he believes would have been more easily won by a conservative position of not going there to begin with, Universal National Health Insurance which would be a boon to small and large businesses in this country and cost less than the non-system we have now, and balancing the budget instead of borrowing from our great grandchildren to pay other countries bills. Will be curious to see how he does running on Republican issues in a Democratic caucus.

If he wins the nomination it will also make for an interesting election in the Fall where the Republican Administration will be defending the traditional Democratic issues of being pro-war, anti-business, high deficit spenders.

Of course the problem with either package is nobody has anything left to do anything with anyway so it probably doesn't much matter but it will make great entertainment while we talk about what we can't do.
