By now most of us have heard about the explosion in the number of 20 foot long Burmese pythons roaming around southern Florida.  Now comes the Giant African Snail, a baseball sized snail that carries a form of meningitis and is turning up by the thousands in yards in southern Florida.

Neither has a common enemy which is why they proliferate.  In a perfect world the snake would swallow the snail, catch meningitis and die, but as we all know it ain't a perfect world.

In the end it will be taken care of in the political world where the legislature will pass a law banning both species and declare the problem solved and we can all pretend it doesn't exist.  Not perfect but likely.

Dear Barry

I've noticed of late that the President appears to be getting into more trouble and his poll numbers are starting down again.  It's no wonder, but part of the problem is image.

Having figured out pretty much what is wrong with the world, how to fix it and leaving the bulk of it to chance I suspect it is time to start bailing the President out, so on Saturday's I'll start giving advice directly to his honor personally under the "Dear Barry" heading.  And the thing we are going to start with is the first name, Barack.  I'm sure it's a fine name even if it is one we are not used to hearing, but......

it don't sound good.  Fact is, it reminds me of the sound my cat makes when he's coughing up a furball.  So I'm Americanizing it to Barry.  While we are at it we're going to add one of those glitchy things to the last name too  Make it O' Bama.  Lo and behold he's an Irishman with a good tan.  Next Saturday:  What to do with Congress.

There is quite a delimma shaping up in Syria.  According to the White House, Syria has crossed a line drawn by the President regarding the use of chemical weapons against Syrian rebels and therefore we are going to supply the rebels with weapons to help overthrow the Syrian government.

Russia, who supports the government says the claims of chemical weapons usage are not true.

The rebels, who are partly made up of al Queda supporters (remember 911), claim without support the government will win.

This is one of those cases of "my enemies enemy is my friend.......even though my new friend is (sort of) still my enemy and my former friend is now (sort of ) my enemy...........at least until next week.

Hopefully, some day we will (sort of) know who was right, who was wrong, and who won (if there is such a thing).

The one thing we can be sure of knowing in the end is what went wrong along the way.

What's Bugging Me.

I have taken to watching ants lately after one happened to stray across the screen of my laptop in the backyard.  I don't think he was very bright as he did not stop to read and contemplate the words of wisdom I was putting on the screen.  In fact, he seemed to be absolutely oblivious to everything around him.  (I say him because my wife said he's a male).

My main experience with ants was reading the story "Leningen vs. the Ants" in high school where a swarm of ants in South America over ran a plantation devouring everything in sight and creating a swath of destruction miles wide.  That was before Terminix.

In any event, my ant was definitely not a member of that tribe.  Quite frankly, I initially thought he was dumber than a brick.

He meandered down my arm to the picnic table where he promptly climbed halfway up a coffee cup, then abruptly changed his mind and headed back the way he came.  I assume he didn't like his coffee black.  From there he found a vase of flowers and wound his way to the top, surveyed the territory and apparently found it wanting.  Back down he went, but he did it on the underside of the flowers and upside down, then turns around and goes  back from whence he came, again upside down.

He wandered all over the countryside for half an hour with no apparent plan at all.  At one point he picked up a dead beetle 10 times his size and paraded about as if he didn't know what to do with it but knew instinctively it must be valuable.  Up and over napkins and silverware and dishes and pans then down the other side when going around would have been 20 times easier. Then he suddenly dropped his prize and went off in another direction as if he forgot he even had it.  It would be the equivalent of me loading a Ford pickup on my back and hiking 10 miles through the Adirondack mountains and then suddenly remembering I was a Chevy guy.

He was tiring to watch and after half an hour of entertinment I dozed off.

It was while I was missing that he chanced to run into the caramel nut roll and when I woke up an hour later I found a family reunion taking place.  In typical timing that's when the wife chose to reappear.  After congratulating me on inviting all the ants in the neighborhood to our picnic table for lunch she also explained that she had looked up this ant on the Internet and she believed it was a carpenter ant and while my caramel nut roll was dessert the house was probably the main course.  She suggested I call an exterminator.  I knew better and headed for the hardware store.......to be continued.

"Rocket Scientists".  We all use the term, "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out" to send the message that you don't have to be too smart to do some particular thing.

My father was a rocket scientist...every Fourth of July.  He would fuel up with four or five beers, then put a couple cherry bombs under an empty Maxwell House coffee can and put a rocket 30 feet in the air.  Success was determined by whether or not he still had his fingers after the takeoff.  Never had an unsuccessful launch, which is more than Werner Von Braun could claim.

So when someone says,  "It don't take a rocket scientist...........", it just might.

The elections are over.  The President's second term is well on it's way.  So now it's time for that time honored spectacle of second terms.  In other words, it's " Scandal Season".

Nixon had one.  Reagan also.  Definitely Clinton and Bush II too.  The one termers were lucky.  They lost.

Obama seems to be working on a bunch already and it's not even mid-terms yet.  Libya, Syria, IRS, NSA to name but a few.  I suspect he will weather all of them to some degree, but when it's all over he's probably gonna wish he lost too.

Too bad you can't do the second term first , 'cause you'd never want to do the first term at all.

Global warming.  Is it real or just someone's imagination?

According to most scientist's, it's the real thing.

Some politicians on the other hand say it's a fantasy, but most of them didn't grow up with a sled and ice skates.

Me.  All I know is the river by my home used to freeze a solid three feet thick every winter when I was a kid and my house has an old ice house that used to supply ice all summer before refrigeration.  That ice was pulled up by horses from the same river.  Today you could be hard pressed to make a whiskey sour on the rocks in February if you were counting on the river for the ice.

The geologists say there used to be a mile of ice over my head 10,000 years ago.  It went somewhere and it's not in the ice house.

i think I've got to hold with the scientists on this one, not because they're right,..........because they're not politicians.

Big murder case out in Arizona.  Girl named Jodi Arias is charged with murdering her ex-boyfriend.  While on her way to visit her new boyfriend she went hundreds of miles out of her way to visit her ex-boyfriend who had dumped her.  She showed up with a camera in her hand , and a pistol in her purse.  He reportedly attacked her when she took a picture of him in the shower.

In order to protect herself from this naked wet man she had to shoot him in the face, stab him 29 times and cut his throat from ear to ear.  She then cleaned herself up and left to see boyfriend number two.

A rational person might think she was a possessive scorned woman who went nuts and just lost it.  Still guilty and premeditated but a nut case nonetheless.

In case you might think she's not nuts, her defense should convince you.  She is pleading that she killed him in "self defense".  In other words, she's as delusional as a congressman with a balanced budget.

Front page in England.  "Lady accuses neighbor of training squirrel to rip up her flower garden.  Tears up neighbors flower garden in retaliation."

That's a headline you will never see in the United States.  It's because we are not civilized like the English.  Here retaliation is spelled "shoot neighbor, burn down his house and sell children into slavery".

We will know we are on our way to be civilized when our flower gardens  outnumber our homicides.

It's was an interesting Friday.  We were. de-Poped, sequestrated and sinkholed all in one day.  Makes you wonder what's next.

I'm not too worried about the Pope.  They always find another one.  As for the sinkhole in Florida.  It's not the first and it won't be the last, but this sequester business is a first and before it's over we are going to hope it is the last.

Basically the Congress and the President kicked the can down the road because they did not agree on the budget and they were thinking by this point they would work something out.  What planet are they on.

Now Speaker Boehner implies the President did this all by himself and the country is going to go to Hell in a hand basket but it's not their fault.  Meanwhile the President is saying the country is going to Hell in a hand basket but it's the Congresses fault.

All I'm sure of is we are going to Hell and I don't have a clue about the trip or what a hand basket really is so I looked it up.  It's "a situation headed for disaster without effort".  Perfect description.  So why no effort.  Because we get the disaster part........and they get the paycheck for doing it.
